Don't you just hate it when someone gives you a recipe, and they leave out the secret ingredient? I wish I understood why someone does that. I consider it such a complement when asked for my recipe, that I will not only give it to you, I will write it out on a gourmet recipe card.

That is why I was surprised when I gave a friend my recipe for cinnamon buns, and she told me that when she made them – they were not as good as mine. She accused me of keeping the "Secret Ingredient" to myself.

I had not kept the secret ingredient to myself and I am going to share with you why my buns were better… it is the "Brand" of spices and herbs you use. If you use old tasteless Cinnamon from the local store that have lost their flavor, you will get ho-hum results. But if you use fresh and high quality organic spices, your buns will pop!

If you are going to go through all the work of making Cinnamon Buns, don't you want to hear "These are the Best Cinnamon Buns I have ever had?!"

Speaking of Cinnamon, did you know that it is more than just a spice for baking?

Just a 1/2 teaspoon a day can:
    ▪    Lower LDL cholesterol
    ▪    Regulate your blood sugar levels
    ▪    Curb your appetite
    ▪    Strengthen your cardiovascular system
    ▪    Boost your immune system
    ▪    Stop medication-resistant yeast infections
    ▪    Fight cancer cells
    ▪    Anti-clotting effect on your blood
    ▪    Reduce arthritis pain
    ▪    Preserves food naturally
    ▪    Boosts cognitive function and memory
    ▪    Fights E Coli bacteria in unpasteurized juices
    ▪    Freshens your breath
    ▪    Removes blood impurities (aka less pimples & blackheads)
    ▪    Relieves menstrual cramping
    ▪    Aids in secreting breast milk
    ▪    Treats insect bites
    ▪    Source of manganese, fibre, iron & calcium

The list goes on, but it shows we need more cinnamon in our life! Maybe they were thinking of cinnamon when they coined the expression "the spice of life."

Not all cinnamon is the same. There are two categories:

1. True or Ceylon – is a lighter tan color and a sweeter, delicate citrus flavor. This type is more expensive. The bark is thin and brittle and the sticks are like a rolled cigar.

2. Cassia is from the cassia tree. This is the cinnamon common in North America. It is a darker reddish brown color and is spicier with a bit of heat. Cassia sticks have a thicker bark and form a double scroll.

Cinnamon In Coffee Would You Like To Know The Secret Ingredient? Some ways to add Cinnamon to your diet:

  • Sprinkle cinnamon on your coffee before brewing, or add to your brewed cup of coffee
  • Add a stick to hot mulled cider or hot chocolate
  • Mix it in almond butter
  • Sprinkle on porridge, along with some maple syrup & pecans
  • Sprinkle over cut up apples for breakfast or a snack
  • Or if you hate the taste, make cinnamon capsules.

Word of Caution:

Like anything, take in moderation. It can be toxic if over indulged, and there are possible side effects if taken with some drugs.

Cinnamon Trivia:

  • Did you know it is one of the Secret Ingredients used in Cola soft drinks?
  • Did you know in 100 A.D. Cinnamon was 15 times more expensive than silver?

  • This ancient spice invokes such strong emotional memories that Real Estate agents encourage you to simmer cinnamon sticks in water prior to an open house (if you didn't fit in baking a batch of cinnamon buns.)

I did not know that the organic was soo much better. But now that I know that, I do hope you will share your great recipe! :-)

Claudia Looi January 31, 2011 at 2:36 PM

Thanks for sharing Elvie. I don’t know much about cinnamon. This is educational and valuable.

Elvie Look January 31, 2011 at 5:12 PM

I’m thrilled you use cinnamon in your coffee too. Were you sipping it while reading the blog? lol Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.

Good quality and organic spices are the Secret Ingredient. My sisters and I realized this because we share our recipes, and I never viewed myself as a great cook – but everyone tells me I am. Then we realized part of it has to do with the quality of flavors we used. We get the best seasonings and spices we can. And of course I will share my recipe. I need to tweak it first, as I eyeball a lot, and now that I am sharing, I want everyone to love it and for it to turn out perfectly for them, so I will be testing it again. I am giving out my recipes to those who sign up on my site – so feel free to do that. Thanks so much for saying hello!!

Wow, I only added cinnamon to my oatmeal because it made it smell nice. I knew would have some benefits but didn’t know exactly what. Thanks for the education Elvie.

Elvie… this is fascinating! I had heard of cinnamon’s qualities before, but I really needed to be reminded! I use Watkin’s cinnamon… I’ve heard that is of the highest quality … what particular brand do you use? I’m certainly going to use it more than I have… I love your ideas on how to use cinnamon!!! Thanks!

Annemarie Cross February 1, 2011 at 8:11 PM

Wow – I never realized there were so may benefits that cinnamon offers. Off to sprinkle some in my coffee.

Thea February 2, 2011 at 6:07 AM

Great tips Elvie. My father has diabetes and he was told that cinnamon would help with his blood sugar and he’s been semi-obsessed with it ever since!!

Another thing my family does – whenever we cook too much stuff, and we can’t get rid of the smell, we boil some cheap cinnamon in the pot to refresh the air.

But I had no clue about some of those other things!! I will be testing them out – thanks :-)

Joy Randall February 2, 2011 at 4:20 PM

Outstanding tip! I had no idea about the benefits or the types of cinnamon. A great read.

Watkins is a great cinnamon! That is the cinnamon I used to use. I am now using Mountain Rose Herbs Organic herbs, spices and essential oils. Wonderful stuff. So your cinnamon buns already have the secret ingredient. :) Thank you so much for your comments.

Elvie, loved your blog on cinnamon.  Very useful information.  Interesting, I just replaced my cinnamon yesterday when I went to the health food store.  Thanks for the reminders about all the benefits and ways of using cinnamon.

Elvie November 18, 2011 at 11:27 AM

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Hugs Michelle!

Elvie November 18, 2011 at 11:29 AM

You can never have too much cinnamon! I had some leftover whipped cream (from my pumpkin pie) so I put some on my coffee and sprinkled it with cinnamon. A huge plop of cinnamon came out… thought I ruined it, but it was delicious!

Marlene January 30, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Ok, there I was reading about packing my suitcase and looking for the secret ingredient when I hovered over the word "secret" and here I am learning about CINNAMON!!!
Oh, oh, I know – You pack CINNAMON in your suitcase.  LOL
